Rabbanit Judith Levitan is a community educator and lawyer with over 15 years’ experience in the field of social justice. She currently works at Legal Aid NSW where she uses Human Centred Design to innovate and improve legal services for disadvantaged people. She holds degrees in Law and Social Work and her honours thesis in Social Work was about community attitudes to domestic violence. She has studied in a range of institutions for women’s higher learning. She received Smicha (rabbinic ordination) from Yeshivat Maharat, an Orthodox institution in New York, USA that ordains Orthodox Jewish women. Most recently she was appointed as the Religious Program Coordinator at Maroubra Synagogue in Sydney. She runs women’s prayer services, gives shiurim and teaches and prepares girls for their bat mitzvah and brides for their weddings. She was a founding member of the Jewish Alliance Against Family Violence a voluntary organisation of women seeking to raise awareness about domestic violence and respectful relationships. She regularly represents the Jewish community at interfaith and cross-cultural events with the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies.
